About the Assistant Sheriff

Assistant Sheriff David Payne

Lieutenant Colonel Dave Payne has over 30 years of experience in law enforcement.  In December of 2022, he was appointed Assistant Sheriff by Sheriff Cox.

Law Enforcement Service

Lieutenant Colonel Payne is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.  He was honorably discharged in 1993 and began his law enforcement career with the Defense Intelligence Agency.  Lieutenant Colonel Payne was hired by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office in 1998 and began working in Patrol.  While working at the Sheriff’s Office from 1998 to 2021 he worked and commanded every Bureau of the Office.  He retired briefly from the agency prior to this appointment to become a Federal Police Officer serving as a Senior Instructor. 


In this current role, Lieutenant Colonel Payne is responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of the Sheriff during his absence.  He is tasked with the day-to-day operation of the Office including the direct supervision and guidance of the Command Staff.
